I have finally given up on Yahoo hosting. Turns out there are many issues beyond the permalink problems I noted in an earlier post. I also had problems getting a simple contact form to work. I chose BlueHost because it was recommended by Wordpress and was able to get everything switched over and running within a few hours.

This photo that I took at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu during our vacation in March has been published in the Schmap!! Honolulu Guide (online). It is an image of Pacific Islander ceremonial garb (I can’t remember which islands, but it wasn’t the ones we were on) taken with my iPhone. I took the picture because love the design, especially the twin antennae-like protrusions. I thought that this was an odd picture for them to choose and it is definitely not one of my best (you can see the smudges on the glass of the display case), but I guess they liked it.

I wanted to create an “About” page that would be interesting and different. I looked for inspiration in Smashing Magazine’s Best Practices For Effective Design Of “About me”-Pages. There are a lot of very cool concepts in this list, but none of them seemed quite right for me. I wanted to express the basic facts of my work, experience and location but also add some more personal information in a simple format. When thinking about how to best express the essence of me, I recalled the “25 Random Things About Me” meme that I completed a while ago on Facebook. This seemed to be a straightforward way to include a lot of information, but not overwhelm readers with pithy paragraphs. I put together my list and then grouped it into chunks of 5 so it would be easier to digest. The most important stuff is at the top so readers can get to that first and then go further if they are interested. I also added a big picture of myself at the beach, hot! Here’s the result: About.
