I have finally given up on Yahoo hosting. Turns out there are many issues beyond the permalink problems I noted in an earlier post. I also had problems getting a simple contact form to work. I chose BlueHost because it was recommended by Wordpress and was able to get everything switched over and running within a few hours.

OK, turns out it that my permalink issue with WordPress was caused by my host, Yahoo (I refuse to add the exclamation point here).

I’ve been with Yahoo since the beginning, but sometimes the way their servers are set up makes things complicated or impossible. I actually switched to Alpha One Technologies to host my business website: www.hedonistchocolates.com because I could not get oscommerce (an open source shopping cart program) installed correctly on Yahoo’s servers.

I don’t have the energy to switch hosts for this site right now, so I found a workaround at Natespost.com. Yahoo does not allow the use of .htaccess files so you have to use a custom permalink structure: /index.php/%postname%/, which isn’t ideal but it gets the job done. Now my pages actually work and I can post my resume!

I’m in the process of revamping my website and decided it would be an interesting project to try WordPress as a way to integrate a blog, as well as a content management system. So far it hasn’t been the easiest thing to do. I got the application installed and set up, but I’m still troubleshooting it. I hope to be able to post my brand new resume here this weekend, but I need to figure out what is causing the internal server error on any new “page” I create. Stay tuned…
